Frequently Asked Questions About Smog

- Why do I need a smog Check?

It really helps to keep the air clean.

- Why are some vehicles referred to test-only stations?

The most likely reason is that your vehicle statistically is more likely to fail (mostly older cars and certain make and models) or it's randomly selected-about 15% all vehicles.

- What is a Test Only station?

As the name implies it's a smog check station which specializes In conducting emissions tests, and doesn't do any emission related repairs. It is also believed that test only smog checks are more complete and accurate with the results, and that's one of the reasons DMV refers certain vehicles to such centers.

- What happens next If my vehicle doesn't pass?

We'll tell you why it failed and give you a copy of the Inspect!on report. It Is your choice to repair it yourself or take it to a smog mechanic. If you cannot afford the repairs you may qualify either for state assistance or a one time two year defelTal which Is also called economic hardship extension. Or if you don't want to repair it, you have the option to sell it to the state for about $1000. We provide application forms for above programs at no charge.

- My vehicle passed the test, what to do next?

The certificate is electronically sent to DMV, so just pay your registration and of required send DMV proof of insurance. We'll also give you a copy d the inspection report with a certificate number on it which you can keep as a proof in case DMV computers crash. Not likely to happen, it's a good future reference. Also you're AAA member you complete your registration at one of their offices or another option would be visiting the DMV online registration renewal website. There is a link to it in the links section.

- How long is my smog check valid for?

Three months of you happen to sell your car, If not, two years, that is till your next biennial smog check..

- Do I need to get a smog check If I'm selling my vehicle?

Yes, according to state law it's seller's responsibility to get the smog check. However we have seen many cases when the buyer came till get a smog check.

Also if transfer of ownership is between immediate family members, like father and son, or siblings there is no need for a smog check to transfer the title. Some DMV offices aren't aware of this, so you might have them know.
